PUMPKIN CARVING TIPS (and photo) FROM YAHOO SHINE

1. Use water-based marker for your template. Wash off and start over if the drawing didn’t turn out right.

2. Use a sharp straight edge knife on lid.

3. Don’t stab, use slow steady strokes and carve away from yourself.

4. Cut the lid at an angle so the bottom is a bit bigger — carved pumkins shrink a bit and the lid can fall in otherwise.

5. Use big spoon or ice cream scooper to remove seeds.

6. Start facial features in the middle and work outward…

7. Use x-acto knife on details like eyebrows and teeth, and a potato peeler for little curves.

MY OWN SAFETY BONUS TIP: Don’t follow the article’s pointers about using candles! Too many fires and costume hazards happen with candles inside pumpkins. Use alternative lighting (0ne example here) instead.
